We dig the Vicoustic Multifuser Wood 64. It’s our favorite of Vicoustic’s premium wood diffusers.

At 5 ⅞ inch deep, the Multifuser Wood 64 is a dramatic looking diffuser that does not simply provide acoustic diffusion. Used as a functional centerpiece to your recording studio, performance space, listening room or home theater, the Multifuser makes a bold design statement. It says “this room is made for music”.

Musicians, recording engineers, hi-fi heads and interior designers love this diffuser because it’s intuitive how it works. Form follows function. The Vicoustic Multifuser looks like it’s designed to diffuse sound, giving it a sense of purpose and place in a music room. While the Vicoustic Multifuser Wood 64 was inspired by the RPG Skyline diffuser, it’s designed differently. The Skyline is a 2D primitive root diffuser (PRD), while the Vicoustic Multifuser is based on a QRD sequence.

Another difference is that the RPG Skyline is made from expanded polystyrene. Wood is a greener material than polystyrene, and the Multifuser’s wood construction makes it durable and beautiful, with a sophisticated look.

The Vicoustic Multifuser is a two-dimensional diffuser. This means it scatters sound both horizontally and vertically to treat problematic reflections and give your room a more neutral acoustic response. Unlike absorption, which removes sound energy from your room and reduces the reverberation time, diffusion disperses acoustical energy. This way liveliness is preserved and your room can actually be made to sound larger than it is.

2D diffusion is often used on the ceiling, on the front wall between speakers, and on the rear wall to improve listening transparency in cases where back wall absorption would render the room too dead.

If you want a lower profile diffuser, the Multifuser Wood 36 is another option. However, the Wood 64 provides provides better diffusion below 500 Hz.

Vicoustic Poly Fuser QR

When the Vicoustic Poly Fuser QR is placed in a vertical position, the quadratic residue sequence will dictate the diffusion on the horizontal axis, while the curve will scatter sound along the vertical axis. Made entirely out of wood, the Poly Fuser QR diffuser is quite dense. This makes it better at diffusing low frequencies than diffusers made from lighter materials.

Vicoustic's Poly Wood Fuser is a high performance deflector panel, aka poly cylinder diffuser, based on an optimal curve. Set includes 6 diffusers.

The ﬁberboard elliptical membrane of the Poly Wood Fuser provides effective scattering from 300 Hz to 12 kHz. Inside, a damped acoustic foam cavity provides absorption at lower mid-range frequencies.

Poly Wood Fusers are a fantasic, economical way to produce diffusion in larger rooms. In domestic sized rooms, however, diffusers such as the Vicoustic Poly Fuser QR and Multifuser Wood tend to sound better.

Why? Because when a sound wave bounces off the Poly Wood Fuser surface, it will be scattered in space, but not time. In other words, poly cylinders are deflectors of sound, but we don't consider them true acoustic diffusers. If you need to return diffuse sound directly to the listener from the first reflection points, we recommend reflection phase grating diffusers (like QRD diffusers, the RPG Skyline or the Multifuser Wood 64) instead of poly cylinders.

RPG Diffractal (Fractal QRD Diffuser)

The Diffractal® by RPG Diffusor Systems offers the broadest spectrum of sound diffusion available today. A nested 1D quadratic residue diffuser (QRD), the Diffractal achieves full spectrum sound diffusion by combining the self-symmetry property of fractals with the uniform scattering of QRD diffusers.

Fractal formations are an elegant way to extend the bandwidth of QRD diffusers. Essentially, the RPG Diffractal contains a set of small QRD diffusers (for high-frequency diffusion) nested inside a large QRD diffuser (for mid-frequency diffusion).

For even better performance, you can mount a set of Diffractal diffusers at different depths (based on fractal self-similarity). This mounting method, called a "fractal modulation", will expand the diffusion bandwidth further into the low frequency range, while simultaneously improving the mid-frequency performance (by eliminating negative effects caused by periodicity). Primacoustic Razorblade QRD Diffuser

A brilliant invention by Manfred R. Schroeder, quadratic residue diffusers are based on elegant mathematics and are still popular today because they are so effective. QRD diffusers, like the Razorblade, achieve optimum scattering at integer multiples of the design frequency, and achieve very good diffusion in between these frequencies.

The Razorblade is an N=17 QRD diffuser, meaning the design is derived from the quadratic residue sequence for the prime number of 17. 17 wells of different depths (determined by the mathematical sequence) create a reflection phase grating that sends acoustic energy back toward the listener with varying time delay. This provides both temporal dispersion (breaking up sound waves with respect to time) and spatial dispersion (distributing sound energy in space).

Because some of the wells blend together, the 17 “wells” in the Razorblade diffuser visually appear to be 15 wells separated by fins.

The depth of the deepest well is 8 inches, which controls the low frequency cutoff (about 400 Hz). The width of the wells facilitates the high frequency diffusion performance (up to about 5.5 kHz). In practice the Primacoustic Razorblade will scatter sound over 5.5 kHz and as low as 200 Hz.

The Primacoustic Razorblade is designed to be positioned at least 6 feet away from the listening position, but we recommend a minimum listening distance of 9 feet.

The design is modular so that you can place multiple Razorblade QRD diffusers side-by-side to create a large diffusive surface. A typical application for this is to scatter reflections on the back wall of RFZ (reflection free zone) and live-end, dead-end control rooms.

The Auralex WavePrism is a 2D hemispherical sound diffuser, meaning it scatters sound in both horizontal and vertical planes. It’s similar to the RPG HemiFussor, but half the price.

These diffusers can be used to eliminate flutter echo and other acoustical anomalies without removing acoustical energy from the space. This helps you achieve a more spacious feel in your room. 2D diffusion is often used on the front wall between speakers, and on the rear wall to improve listening transparency without absorbing back wall reflections.

Because the WavePrism is a relatively shallow diffuser it is efficient at close range diffusion, and can be placed closer to the listener than deeper designs. It is sized to drop into a suspended ceiling grid or it can be mounted to a wall to handle front-to-back acoustical issues.
