From his book Sound Reproduction, Chapter 22.2: Laying out the Room, Floyd recommends front channels as close as possible to seated ear height. The center speaker should be at the same height as left and right, but if that&#039;s not possible it should be no more than 5-6 degrees lower (1-1.25 inches per foot of viewing distance).

He recommends mounting surround loudspeakers about 2 feet above seated ear height. He also goes into depth on sub woofer placement and low frequency optimization in his book. I highly recommend it.
